Juarez Will Not End

Otra Linea in Juarez, March 2009

You start to wonder if it’ll ever end but it will end.

La violencia. The violence.

The police can get back to business and the narcos can get back to business and the patrons will get back to business and the people will get back to business. Amazing how relative things become: the old corrupt ways look like paradise now. At least you could go to a restaurant and meet your friends, at least you could go to the movies. At least you could go to school.

Now?

The streets are theirs at night. In the daytime? You can go to work if you have work. The peso is worth 50% less. Crazies are on the loose (like they weren’t before? Remember the femicides?).

One thing for sure: Juarez has got the stiffest upper lip I have ever seen. Defiant. Life goes on. No matter how this ends, life goes on, and, it will end.
Juarez is defiant. Desafiante.

Juarez will not end.
