El Panteon nuevo, Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico - 1988
The cemetery came before the barrio. An ultimate act of realism.This was shot as part of a story on immigrants to Juarez (Los inmigrantes de Juarez, 1987-88) from the interior of Mexico. This neighborhood is now totally populated and, in fact, is in the way of major development plans that link Juarez to El Paso’s west side. The land has become valuable and the “squatter,” nature of the barrio stands in the way of “progress.” El Panteon nuevo could become El Panteon viejo, se fue (the old cemetery that left).

I just came across your site, and I’m very interested in what you have going here. I grew up in San Diego county, so this issue is basically right in my backyard. Also, since I study cultural anthropology, and have started doing some research in Mexico, this issue takes on even more meaning. Anyway, I like what you’re doing, and I will keep checking in…
